Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder
A person who has Autism Spectrum Disorder displays three major hallmarks:
1. Qualitative impairment in social interaction
2. Qualitative impairment in communication
3. Restricted, repetitive and stereotypical patterns of behaviour, interests and activities
Autism Spectrum Disorder has no known specific cause, and though there may be a genetic basis to Autism Spectrum Disorder, there is no one gene linked to the disorder. Autism is a spectrum disorder. This means that the symptoms and characteristics of autism can present themselves in a wide variety of combinations, ranging from mild to severe. Although autism spectrum disorder is defined by a certain set of behaviours, children and adults can exhibit any combination of the behaviour in any degree of severity. Hence there is no standard type or typical person with autism spectrum disorder.
